Marrakech to Erg Chegaga 3-days - Itinerary:
Day 1: From Marrakech to Agdez Oasis
Pick you up by 4x4 from Marrakech to Agdez Oasis at 8:30 am. We drive through the high Atlas Mountain, Tizi-n-Tichka (2260m) is the highest peak in North Africa after we leave the main road, and we take a side road that leads to Telouet Kasbah, which belonged to the Glaoui family, the lords of the Atlas. You will visit the Kasbah accompanied by a local guide who will tell you the area's history and the Atlas lords. From here, we reach Ounila Valley. It was one of the main passageways of hundreds, even thousands of camels in a caravan travelling from the sub-Saharan cities to Marrakech transporting Saharan merchandise and salt.
Arrive at Ait ben Haddou Ksar for lunch. It's a fortified village and a UNESCO World Heritage site. After lunch in Ait ben Haddou, you visit this fascinating old Kasbah after continuing to Ouarzazate and Agdez, where we spend the night in a Riad or a Guest House.
Day 2: From Agdez Oasis to Erg Chegaga
Today, we start the trip from Agdez to Erg Chegaga at 9:00 am. We will drive through the ancient caravan road between the river and the mountain, enjoying the beauty of the old villages and gardens. You will have a short pause for a tea break in Oulad Othman Kasbah. We return to the main road, pass by Zagora, the biggest city before the Sahara desert, and then to Tamgroute to visit the Koranic library. It is also famous for the Green Potteries.
Arrive at Mhamid, the gate into the Desert, where the paved road ends and the Desert starts. We take off-road to Erg Chegaga and cross all the different types of Desert, such as Erg, Reg, and Hammada. Arrive at Erg Chegaga dunes, where you will experience a camel ride and enjoy the spectacular sunset from the top of the dunes. Musical evening around the fire, dinner, and night in desert camp.
Day 3: From Erg Chegaga To Marrakech
If you wake up early enough, you can enjoy the spectacular sunrise from the top of the dunes. After breakfast, the desert tour continues from Erg Chegaga camp to Marrakech. Driving in the Sahara desert with varying scenery, one is Lake Iriqui. It is a vast, dry lake nowadays. It runs out to the Draa River.
Stop near the mountain Lmadwar, which is famous for its volcanic rocks. It is also a great spot to discover more about the Desert; if lucky, you can find fossils. After, we reach the nomadic town, Foum Zguid, at lunchtime. We take the paved road to Taznakht, famous for its Berber rugs and carpets. Arrive in Marrakech by the end of the day. - Footwear: Choose shoes or sandals. Walking shoes are unnecessary in the desert; lighter footwear is preferable. If selecting sandals, pack socks as nighttime temperatures drop.
- Clothing: Light attire for the day and warmer garments for the evening, including rain protection. In March, temperatures range from 10°C at night to 26°C during the day.
- Sun protection: Suncream and sunglasses.
- First aid: Include adhesive plasters, dressings, sterile compresses, disinfectant, paracetamol or aspirin tablets/sachets, antidiarrheal medication, eye drops, and blister dressings.
- Water bottle.
- Hermetic bags: Freezer-type bags to protect your camera or phone.
